Reading List for 2019

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Everyone should read. Read for enjoyment, read for knowledge, read for self improvement, read to understand others, read to understand yourself. There are many reasons to read, all of them are valuable.

In our society of constant screen-time entertainment; movies, TV shows, and social media, our brains are often on vacation, lazing about on a beach, content to relax and check out for a bit. It is important that we stretch our minds, work them out, build up some creative muscles again, and reading is the best way we can do this!

I challenge each of you to carve out more time in your busy schedules this coming 2019 year to read more. To help get you started, I have compiled a list of all of my favorite books for you. Also……I love, love, love new book recommendations so please comment with your favorites!

Fantasy:

Anything and Everything written by Brandon Sanderson (my favorite author if you haven’t figure that out yet)….my favorites of his include:

  • The Mistborn Trilogy
  • The Way of Kings
  • The Reckoners Series: YA book – What if all superheroes were bad?
  • Warbreaker

Now for fantasy that is not Brandon Sanderson:

  • Dawn of Wonder by Johnathan Renshaw
  • The Powdermage Trilogy by Brian McClellan
  • The Kingkiller Chronicle (Especially the first book The Name of the Wind) by Patrick Rothfuss
  • The Belgariad – David Eddings
  • The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington
  • Maze Runner by James Dashner (YA)
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (YA)

Sci-Fi:

  • Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
  • Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson (I would recommend listening to this series on Audible! So hilarious)

Mystery:

  • The Pendergast novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (Relic and Reliquary are the first books, they are good, but very dense, I would recommend starting with book 3 – Cabinet of Curiosities)
  • Any of Agatha Christie’s works

Books for Personal Growth:

  • Failing Forward: Turning Mistakes into Stepping Stones for Success by John C. Maxwell (My dad went through this book with me in middle school and it changed my life! Good for your children)
  • Point Man: How a Man Can Lead His Family by Steve Farrar (I have not read this, but my dad and husband both highly recommend this book especially for all men!)
  • Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss (Everyone should read this, but especially if you are in business)
  • The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss (I do not agree with a lot of principles in this book, but it did help to change my mindset about how I should look at work and career)
  • The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Gary Chapman (Probably the book I have used most in my life. This applies to all relationships, not just married ones!)

  2. Yes! Read!
Local teachers we work with all praise reading as the most formative way to grow our minds (and hearts).
One quote I have heard that I think is very true: “if you want to predict what kind of person you will be in the next 3 years, look at the books you read and the people you hang out with.”
    Thanks for the encouragement.
